Selecting a TV for the Den

A traditional den is usually a personal space—a place to get away, read, contemplate, and maybe watch the news or catch up on some sports. A den is also traditionally a small to medium-sized room, so the TV’s screen size must be appropriate for the size of the room. 

Flat-panel TVs  
Wall-mounted flat-panel TVs are ideal for dens and family rooms because they don’t take up any floor space. When expertly installed, these TVs installed can take on the appearance of a picture frame so you might consider buying one of those DVDs of famous paintings and putting it on continuous play.

If the room gets a lot of light, an LCD or LED TV might be preferred. If the room lighting is a bit on the dim side, a plasma TV will be better. In either case, make sure it’s a high definition TV, preferably with 1080p resolution specification.

What size? 
Sound Advice usually recommends 42″ to 50″ televisions for most bedrooms. Of course, this is a generalization. For a more accurate estimate, you can use our TV screen size formula: Viewing Distance = 1.5 to 2.5 x TV screen size

Plugging in a few popular TV screen sizes gives us:

Screen Size: 26” Viewing Distance:3-½ to 5-½ feet
Screen Size: 32” Viewing Distance: 4 to 6-½ feet
Screen Size: 40” Viewing Distance: 5 to 8-½ feet
Screen Size: 46” Viewing Distance: 5-¾ to 9-½ feet
Screen Size: 65” Viewing Distance: 8 to 13-½ feet

Sound is important too
A good sound system to go along with the TV in the den is essential, especially if you watch moves. A quality home theater receiver and some surround sound speakers will add immeasurably to the viewing experience.
