Selecting a TV for the Bedroom
Who doesn’t love to watch TV in bed? For many folks, myself included, it’s where we do most of our TV viewing. So would you settle for a hum-drum TV in the bedroom, when you have a nice one in your living room or den? That just doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Flat-panel TVs
Before flat-panel televisions hit the market, a TV in the bedroom usually had to be fairly small. After all, most bedrooms are smaller than living rooms, so space is always an issue. But flat-panel TVs change everything. Finding space on the wall to hang a plasma, LCD, or LED TV isn’t that much of a challenge. Even if it’s not wall mounted, a flat-panel TV on its table stand can easily fit on a dresser top, nightstand, or in an armoire.
If the lighting in the bedroom is fairly bright, an LCD or LED TV might be preferred. If the lighting is a bit on the dim side (which it usually is at night), a plasma TV is a better choice. In either case, make sure it’s a high definition TV, preferably with 1080p resolution. That way you’re sure of getting the very best picture quality.
What size?
Sound Advice usually recommends 42″ to 50″ televisions for most bedrooms. Of course, this is a generalization. For a more accurate estimate, you can use our TV screen size formula: Viewing Distance = 1.5 to 2.5 x TV screen size
Plugging in a few popular TV screen sizes gives us:
Screen Size: 26” Viewing Distance:3-½ to 5-½ feet
Screen Size: 32” Viewing Distance: 4 to 6-½ feet
Screen Size: 40” Viewing Distance: 5 to 8-½ feet
Screen Size: 46” Viewing Distance: 5-¾ to 9-½ feet
Screen Size: 65” Viewing Distance: 8 to 13-½ feet
Don’t forget the surround sound
A good sound system to go along with the TV is essential, especially if you watch moves. A quality home theater receiver and some surround sound speakers will add immeasurably to the viewing experience. In a bedroom, a sound bar is a great way to add surround sound without taking up much space. A sound bar puts multiple surround speakers into a single, easy to install cabinet, which is perfect for bedrooms.
