What is a DVR?
The ability to record a TV show and then watch it later is one of life’s pleasures. I remember well the first VCRs and how they completely changed the way I viewed television. Finally, I was no longer tied to the broadcaster’s schedule. With a VCR, I could watch my favorite TV shows whenever I wanted, on my own schedule. But those early VCRs were crude. The videotapes had a limited recording time and they took up lots of storage space. And finding a particular show among all those tapes was always a challenge. But the real challenge was using the VCR’s recording timer. I eventually figured it out, but it wasn’t exactly intuitive, to put it mildly. There had to be a better way.

Enter the Digital Video Recorder
The DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is very much like an old VCR, but instead of videotapes, a DVR records digitally, usually with a computer-style hard drive. This makes it easy to instantly locate and access the show you want to watch (no more waiting as the tape fast-forwards or rewinds).

That’s nice, but what’s really great about a DVR is the way it can record when I’m not at home. Instead of that confusing timer system, a DVR uses an intuitive menu system where selecting a show is as easy as a point and click. Want to record the show every time it’s on? No problem. What if the show changes schedule to another day or another time? The DVR automatically knows and changes along with the schedule. I never miss an episode of my favorite shows. I can even set the DVR when I’m away from home from my laptop or my iPhone. Now that’s nice.

Add life to viewing live TV
Another feature I really love is how my DVR pauses live TV. If I’m watching a ball game and the phone rings, I simply pause the game and answer the phone. When I’m done with the call, I press play and the game starts exactly where I left it. If there’s an interesting play, I can also rewind and create my own instant relay. A DVR puts me totally in control of the viewing experience.
